The corridor follows the Barrier Highway from Burra to Cockburn.  The key arterial road that connects to the corridor is the Goyder Highway.  The main pinch points are between Burra and East of Orroroo.  The project will widen, strengthen and realign various sections along the corridor.

Targeted upgrades will increase access for higher efficiency heavy vehicles, leading to an overall increase in the efficiency of the corridor in line with the ROSI objectives.  Key industries that will benefit from an upgrade to this corridor include, grain, fuel and livestock.

Upgrades along this section of Barrier Highway could include:

  • shoulder sealing
  • bridge widening and safety barrier upgrades
  • road safety improvements
  • rest areas for improved fatigue management
  • pavement rehabilitation and resurfacing
  • intersection upgrades.

Key Investigations underway include:

  • bridge widening – works to widen and strengthen key bridges to improve safety and cater for heavy vehicle loads
  • intersection upgrades – upgrades to cater for heavy vehicle turning movements on freight routes.

Shoulder sealing and audio tactile line marking – widening the sealed road width and improved line marking to address fatigue safety risks.
